NATURE VS HIGHWAY 413

Client: Ontario Nature

TORONTO, May 22, 2024 – As part of a six-week placement with the communication team at Ontario Nature, MISSION BAY I Digital Agency had the opportunity to develop a package of digital content to support ongoing nature conservation campaigns. Among the created productions was an illustration aimed at urging the Ontario government (Canada) to reassess the environmental impact of Highway 413, an ongoing construction project.

A Serious Threat to the Local Environment

The six-lane, 52-kilometre highway would have devastating impacts on nature and farmland.

  • Paving over 400 acres of the Greenbelt and more than 2,000 acres of Ontario’s most productive farmland

  • Impacting 29 species at risk

  • Crossing over 85 rivers and streams

  • Destroying or partially destroying 75 wetlands

  • Fragmenting highly vulnerable aquifers

  • Emitting more than 17 million tonnes of additional CO2 emissions by 2050

The Power of Illustrating

We found the illustration to be a powerful tool for denouncing the destructive Highway 413 project, as it perfectly juxtaposes governmental arguments with the reality of environmental destruction. The first draft has been proposed and approved for further development.

Every Voice Matters

Highway 413 would come with an alarming cost. Fortunately, the federal government has amended the Impact Assessment Act such that it can redesignate Highway 413 for an environmental assessment.

Please join Ontario Nature and more than 5,100 other Ontarians in urging the Government of Canada to step in and fulfill its obligations to protect waterways, habitats, at-risk species, migratory birds and fish.
